By Mr.Sun

An ultrasonic procedure that works well on one steel product may not transfer directly to a cast stainless component. Material structure, geometry and available probe surfaces influence the examination. The inspection plan should therefore demonstrate suitability for the actual casting rather than rely on the general label ultrasonic tested.

The objective is a defined examination with understood coverage and limitations. A report that explains an inaccessible or poorly evaluated region is more useful than an unqualified statement that the entire casting passed.

Start with the required examination volume

Mark the regions that must be evaluated and the relevant acceptance criteria. Then review possible sound paths and probe access with the qualified inspection provider. A narrow exterior surface or complex curvature may prevent a straightforward scan of the intended region.

The plan should identify whether preparation or machining is needed to create a suitable scanning surface. If that surface is temporary, its removal must be coordinated with the manufacturing route. Inspection should not be added after finishing if the required access no longer exists.

Account for the material structure

Ultrasonic wave behavior can be affected by grain structure and anisotropy. Cast austenitic stainless components can present examination challenges that differ from fine-grained reference material. The provider should select and validate the technique accordingly.

This does not justify declaring the material uninspectable without investigation. It means that the method, calibration approach and demonstrated capability must be appropriate. The responsible NDT authority should determine what can be evaluated and what complementary examination is needed.

Planning element Straightforward assumption Better project question
Calibration Any steel block is adequate Is the reference suitable for the required examination?
Coverage A probe can reach the exterior Can the intended internal region be evaluated?
Signal quality A visible echo proves capability What limitations affect detection and interpretation?
Final report UT passed Which regions, method and criteria were applied?

Distinguish no reportable indication from no limitation

An examination can find no reportable indication within the evaluated volume while still having documented limitations. Those are different statements. The report should not hide a coverage restriction inside a general pass result.

If a specified region cannot be evaluated adequately, the buyer and responsible technical authority need to agree the next action. It may involve another technique, a changed inspection stage or a design review. The inspector should not substitute a method without recording and authorizing the change.

Use representative development evidence

For a new geometry, an early inspection trial can confirm whether the planned route is practical. Use representative material and geometry, and define the question the trial is intended to answer. A convenient unrelated block may not reproduce the important examination conditions.

The trial record should describe the setup and conclusion sufficiently for repeat production. If the casting or process changes in a way that affects inspection, review the previous evidence rather than assuming it remains applicable indefinitely.

Put the inspection requirement in the enquiry

When contacting TripleAce Castings, provide the specified UT method, acceptance basis and examination zones where available. If the requirement is still being developed, identify the critical regions and involve the qualified inspection provider early. This makes the feasibility review concrete without promising an unsupported universal detection capability.
